SAFE 2 SCHOOL SAFE 2 HOME: SCHOLAR TRANSPORT PROJECT LAUNCH 

Global Road Safety Partnership South Africa launched one of its flagship projects called “Safe-to-School-Safe-to-Home  Scholar Transport” in Umlazi (KZN), 10 July 2019 sponsored by Toyota. Safe-to-School-Safe-to-Home  Scholar Transport is a project focusing on the drivers of vehicles transporting school children.

A Moment of Silence for all those lost and those affected  by road accidents was announced by Ms Siphindile Ngidi who opened and welcome stakeholders to the Safe-to-School-Safe-to-Home  Scholar Transport project Launch.

The president, Mr Andrew Kirby from Toyota South Africa Motors (Pty) Ltd (TSAM) graced us with his presence. “We have set ourselves a number of different targets and the most important one is to have 0% fatalities in road crashes”. Mr Andrew Kirby said the focus of the project is on key aspects: driver fitness, driver behavior, vehicle fitness, passenger behavior, schools, parents and community involvement and also compliance with policies and regulations.

GRSP ZA Chairperson, Ms. Ntobeko Mogadime said the project aims to not only improve the driving skills of the drivers but most importantly their awareness of the safety of  children they are transporting, the safety of their vehicles, their knowledge of road safety with specific reference to the major risk factors and their overall courteous and safe behaviour as drivers.

20 drivers will undergo a first responder training. The simulation driver training officially started on the 26th of June 2019 at Afro Fleet Driver Training Academy. The progress of the Safe-to-School-Safe-to-Home  Scholar Transport project is monitored by a stakeholder group comprising of representatives from the ETA, Toyota, GRSP South Africa, Department of Education, Department of Transport, Municipal Traffic Police, principals, drivers and service providers.

A special pledge was signed by delegates Mr Andrew Kirby:  President & CEO Toyota South Africa Motors (Pty) Ltd (TSAM), Ms Ntobeko Mogadime:  GRSP Chairperson (South Africa), Ms Ravina Sewlal:  EThekwini Transport Authority (ETA), Mr Mpofu Bonga: Department of transport (KZN.) and Mr Nzimande: Leaner Transport Drivers representative (KZN). This pledge commits all role players to working towards the goals and objectives of road safety.
