YOURS TRAINING IN PORT ELIZABETH WITH THE YOUTH ROAD SAFETY AMBASSADORS.

The training started on the 15th of July 2019 and it will run until the 18th of July 2019.

15 youth road safety ambassadors will receive capacity building and empowerment training focusing on personal development and road safety by the YOURS team.

The youth ambassadors are based at Nelson Mandela University under student chapter programme. The 15 youth ambassadors were selected from over 100 students through rigorous interviews by the South African Red Cross society (SARCS) provincial team and Global Road safety South Africa (GRSP ZA).

The empowerment and road safety training is a renowned training programme which has  been rolling throughout the world (Asia, Africa & Caribbean). The facilitators Manpreet Darroch and Alex Onyango are experienced trainers with over 10 years experience in youth and road safety.

By the end of the training, Ambassadors will be able to:

  1. Explain the road safety crisis facing young people globally and in their country and describe what factors put youth at risk.
  2. Identify the key risk factors in road safety; distracted driving, drink and drug driving and seatbelts.
  3. Demonstrate methods of influencing young people to develop a road safety culture in their communities; through peer education and campaigning.
  4. Develop the essential skills to be a strong road safety ambassador; presentation skills, communication skills, creative messaging and action planning.

The youth ambassadors are expected to reach out and spread the word on road safety to over 6000 university students and through the outreach quarterly events to reach communities around Nelson Mandela University Campuses.

Road Safety Ambassadors programme phase 2 will run for a period of 14 months collaborating with SA Red Cross Societies: Eastern Cape provincial office and Department of Transport Eastern Cape province.
