GRSP ZA Local Coordinator Receives the Zenani Mandela Road Safety Scholarship 2011 Sianne Abrahams from the Global Road Safety Partnership South Africa was awarded the Zenani Mandela Road Safety Scholarship 2011 sponsored by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the FIA foundation and the National Department of Transport. With this award, Sianne attended the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) Foundation Road Safety Scholarship Programme, with road safety scholars from across the globe. During this time, Sianne enhanced her knowledge of the integrated traffic safety systems as well as gained practical knowledge on methods of implementation. Central to the focus of the course was providing scholars with the opportunity to grapple with their National Road Safety Strategies in response to the five pillars of the Decade of Action. On completion, Sianne was awarded a certificate by Prince Michael of Kent in the House of Lords in the United Kingdom.

On her return to South Africa, Sianne was presented with a certificate of her accomplishment in Road Safety by the South African Minister of Transport Sibusiso Ndebele as well as representatives from the Mandela Family. Her acceptance speech highlighted areas where South Africa has the opportunity to improve and applauded the work done by road safety practitioners thus far. She said, ‘The scholarship provided by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, The FIA Foundation and the South African National Department of Transport, gave me the opportunity to learn about best practices in road safety from across the globe. My work has just begun. The opportunity that was given to me will be used daily to ensure that no other child, like Zenani, has to die because of a senseless road crash.’ Media coverage of the event was flighted on SABC 2 as well as on all electronic media:

Congratulations on this achievement.
