Government, business and civil society - working together to save lives

GRSP ZA Members partner together for The UN Global Road Safety Week 2015

The Global Road Safety Partnership South Africa (GRSP ZA), in conjunction with Childsafe South Africa and the Department of Transport and Public Works, joined with supporting sponsors and took action during Global World Safety Week 4–10 May 2015 (as part of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020).

With the theme was children and road safety: #SaveKidsLives, the week highlighted the plight of children on the world's roads to generate action to better ensure their safety; and promote the inclusion of safe and sustainable transport in the post-2015 development agenda.

With the support of GRSP ZA, Childsafe (in partnership with FedEx) started the week off with the inception of the Walk this Way Project in Delft, Cape Town on the 4 May 2015. The project aims to promote child pedestrian safety in five South Africa school zone areas by conducting road safety interventions, evaluating the results and sharing best practice both locally and abroad.

The week then followed with road safety activities on the 05 May 2015, with Driver Awareness at the Red Cross Children's Hospital & Groote Schuur Hospital, where information pamphlets was distributed to staff and parents visiting the hospitals as well as to motorist leaving both hospitals. The aim of this activity was to create awareness not only on road safety, but also to educate people about the new Child Restraint law (0-3 years).

On the 6 May 2015 a walk and safety presentation was held at Chumisa Primary School and Onako Educare in Khayelitsha to the learners and educators through a Danny Cat presentation & and engagement of each stakeholder at the schools.

On the 7th and 8th May 2015 we created awareness through road safety talks at creches/ECD centres within Metro regions with parents of children attending the crèche and crèche kids.

The UN Global Road Safety Week was indeed successful and GRSP ZA together with Childsafe South Africa and the Department of Transport and Public Works would like to urge you all to help us in spreading the message of the importance of road safety, not only on rare road safety themed occasions, but every single day of the year. Together we can make a difference!
