Government, business and civil society - working together to save lives

Walking Groups

A ‘walking group’ is a group of children who walk to school along an identified ‘safe’ route escorted by two adult volunteers, one of whom leads (the ‘driver’) and the other follows (the ‘conductor’). The adult volunteers are usually parents of children in the walking groups. They supervise the walking groups on a rostered basis.

The Walking groups usually aim to assist the poverty areas in South Africa. They employ women as the group supervisors and the women are then receiving an independent salary for their services to the community. The supervisors protect the children from being kidnapped or from harmed. Thus allowing children safety and creates new political and economic opportunities for the unemployed. This program fundamentally strengthens societies which is exactly what this Walking Groups Programme represents.
