eThekwini Safe to School Project

The Safe Routes to School programme follows a multi-stakeholder approach and will use the same methodology as the programme that was implemented in schools in the Cape Town Metropolitan Council which was also funded by the FIA Foundation.

The eThekwini Safe to School project is a Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) Programme that has already been implemented internationally, in countries such as China and Vietnam. The pilot programme is aimed at replicating the international project framework and evaluating its impacts in the South African context. The programme recommends a range of actions that are complementary and focused on effective outcomes. These actions include:

  • installing low-cost engineering treatments to improve children's safety
  • providing visible enforcement by traffic police or others
  • educating children and their parents about road safety issues
  • getting publicity about the programme and activities.

Thus far, an environment assessment has been completed at the 8 chosen schools in and around the eThekwini location and the process also included the training of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipal engineers. The Road Safety Education Programme has been implemented through Takalani Sesame for Foundation Phase (Grades R – 3) and Multimedia by SANRAL for Intermediate and Senior phases (Grade 4 – 6 and Grade 7).
