Dr Gale Ure

Chief Executive Officer – The Johannesburg Coronation Foundation Bioethicist and Health Law Specialist

Dr Gale Ure is a distinguished bioethicist, psychologist and healthcare leader with more than 25 years of experience spanning welfare services, corporate institutional management and academia. She currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of The Johannesburg Coronation Foundation and is widely recognised for her expertise in ethics, health law and complex decision-making. Dr Ure holds two doctoral degrees: a Doctor of Literature and Philosophy (D Litt et Phil) in Psychology and a PhD in Bioethics and Health Law. A PEPFAR Fellow, she is also an Honorary Lecturer in Bioethics and Health Law at the Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics at the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School. 

Throughout her career, Dr Ure has worked extensively in the fields of chronic mental health, disability, substance abuse, ageing and rehabilitation. Her work has focused on improving the quality of care and strengthening ethical frameworks within healthcare and social systems. Today, she consults and teaches on the ethical processes involved in complex end-of-life decision-making and the role of healthcare practitioners in navigating the often-challenging space between medical treatment, care and death.

A respected thought leader and sought-after speaker, Dr Ure is the editor of Abnormal Psychology: South African Perspectives, published by Oxford University Press, and serves as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. She is also a member of the Association of Death Education and Counselling and the South African Association of Health Educationalists.

Dr Ure brings to RSPSA a unique and deeply human perspective on the impact of road trauma, loss and recovery. Her expertise strengthens the organisation’s commitment to ethical leadership, people-centred advocacy and the protection of vulnerable individuals and communities affected by road crashes. Her appointment further enriches RSPSA’s mission to place human dignity, compassion and responsible decision-making at the centre of road safety.
